‘Deadpool’ Director & Producer Want Spider-Man To Pay A Visit To The Merc With A Mouth

Now that Sony Pictures has teamed with Marvel Studios to shareSpider-Man, allowing him to enter the Marvel cinematic universe alongside the Avengers, fans have been hoping that a deal might be in the cards for more crossovers with characters that Marvel doesn’t own right now.

20th Century Fox still owns the rights toX-Men,Fantastic FourandDeadpool, which means those characters cannot legally crossover into the Marvel cinematic universe at Disney. That also means the Avengers and Spider-Man can’t venture into any of Fox’s Marvel movies either. However, it sounds likeDeadpooldirectorTim Milleris doing everything he can to build some bridges in order to potentially allow a Deadpool Spider-Man crossover on the big screen.

Speaking withSuperhero Hypewhile promoting the forthcoming home video release ofDeadpoolnext month, director Tim Miller revealed that he andX-Menfranchise producerSimon Kinberg"have been trying to build bridges" to potentially allow for Spider-Man to meet Deadpool at some point in the future. However, this is far from a done deal. When Kinberg talked about the possibility, this is what he said:

I would love to see it. Both of us are close with [Marvel’s]Kevin[Feige], we respect and love Kevin. If it were even remotely possible, we will find a way ‘cause we’d would love to see it.

So it doesn’t sound like there have been any official discussions, but both Miller and Kinberg are certainly trying to play nice with Marvel. The question is whether or not Sony would be willing to play ball. Hopefully if Kevin Feige is on board an idea like this he could convince Sony to share Spider-Man a little more, because having the smart-mouthed webslinger match wits with the Merc with a Mouth would be awesome.

However, I think that it might be a little easier and more interesting to merely have Deadpool cross over into the other comic book franchises instead. After all, Deadpool doesn’t follow the conventional rules of a movie by breaking the fourth wall and talking to the audience. So it would stand to reason that he wouldn’t follow the boundaries between studios and could come and go wherever he pleases. Of course, that would require some paperwork to be filled out too, but at least we know it’s not impossible anymore.

20th Century Fox and Marvel Studios don’t seem to be as friendly as Marvel and Sony though. Plus, Fox doesn’t seem to be in as desperate of a position as Sony was afterThe Amazing Spider-Man 2didn’t live up to expectations, both critically and at the box office. But once Fox sees how lucrative having Spider-Man in the Marvel cinematic universe can be afterCaptain America: Civil Wararrives next month, maybe they’ll realize that it’s good for them and Marvel. But more importantly, it’s great for the fans.
