‘Logan’ Black & White Screening Locations Announced, Most Of America Is Screwed
Earlier this year, we learned that directorJames Mangoldwas already working on a black and white version ofLogan. However, it wasn’t until last week that we learned this special version of the film would debut on the big screen in addition to being part of the home video release. At the time, there were no details on exactly where we’d be able to see the black and whiteLoganin theaters, though we knew it wouldbe screening for one night onlyonMay 16.
Now we have the official details on where you may seeLoganin black and white, orLogan Noiras it’s being dubbed, and the bad news is that most of the country won’t even have an opportunity to see this alternate version of the movie on the big screen.
20th Century Fox has announced that Alamo Drafthouse will be the only theater chain showingLoganat 8pm ET on May 16. The screenings will be accompanied by a live streaming Q&A with director James Mangold. Other than Alamo Drafthouse locations, Los Angeles fans will be able to seeLoganin black and white thanks to American Cinematheque screening it at the Egyptian Theater. You might notice that fans in the Midwest are pretty much screwed if they want to the black and white version of Logan in theaters. For me personally, the closest theater showingLogan Noiris on Omaha, Nebraska, roughly eight hours away. There used to be an Alamo Drafthouse location in Kalamazoo, Michigan, but it recently closed.
I can’t stress how annoying it is when Alamo Drafthouse is the only location hosting special event screenings like this. I wish studios would expand their reach to give fans outside of major cities like Los Angeles and New York (and in this case Texas) a chance to enjoy opportunities like this. Not even Chicago is being given a screening ofLogan Noir, and that’s just ridiculous.
Anyway, if you’re lucky enough to attend one of these Logan screenings, attendees are urged to attend wearing only black and white clothing. In fact, at the Brooklyn screening this is required and will be strictly enforced. Those audience members in proper black and white attire will receive an exclusive commemorative event poster.
The good news is that fans who are still interested in seeingLoganin black and white will be able to watch it when the film hits home video on on Digital HD onMay 16and 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray and DVD onMay 23. It’s listed among the special features on the home video release right here:

“During production of LOGAN I took many black and white photographs and noticed how striking and dramatic our gritty settings and characters appeared in monochrome,” said Mangold. “The western and noir vibes of the film seemed to shine in the format and there was not a trace of modern comic hero movie sheen. Then, while editing, Fox and I started posting some of the black and white stills online and fans also began to respond enthusiastically, many hoping that they would get a chance to see the finished film in carefully timed, high contrast black and white. Well. Sometimes hope becomes reality.”
To celebrate the release ofLogan Noir, Alamo Drafthouse will be bringing the film to the big screen in all of its monochromatic glory for one night only starting at8 PM ESTonTuesday, May 16th. The event screenings will also be accompanied by an exclusive, live streaming Q&A featuring director James Mangold. Attendees in every location of the screening will be able to participate in the live discussion with Mangold via Twitter using the hashtag #askalamo. Los Angeles fans will also get the chance to see Logan slash through the big screen as Alamo Drafthouse and Fox co-present LOGAN NOIR with American Cinematheque for a screening at the Egyptian Theatre.
