M. Night Shyamalan Will Create TV Thriller Series For Apple
M. Night Shyamalanis the latest big name to head to Apple. TheSixth Sensefilmmaker will produce a straight-to-series thriller for Apple’s new streaming service. In their quest to compete with Netflix, Apple has already signed several big names for new projects.
Apple’s streaming service continues to grow.Varietyconfirms that M. Night Shyamalan, the twist-ending loving filmmaker behindThe Sixth Sense,Unbreakable,The VisitandSplit, has signed a straight-to-series deal with Apple for a new thriller. There are no plot details yet, but the series will feature 10 half-hour episodes. Shyamalan set to direct the first episode of the series.
Shyamalan’s Blinding Edge Pictures will produce the series, withAshwin Rajan,Jason Blumenthal,Todd BlackandSteve Tischserving as executive producers. Beyond the new series, Shyamalan is in the process of editing the highly-anticipatedGlass.
The M. Night Shyamalan Apple series won’t be the director’s first foray into TV. Shyamalan also served as executive producer on theTwin Peaks-esque FOX seriesWayward Pines. If you were hoping for moreWayward Pines, though, I have some bad news: the show has been cancelled. FOX toldTV Linethat the series is “unlikely” to return for a third season. Shyamalan was also attached to aTales From the Cryptrebootfor TNT, but that project has since returned to the grave.
Apple’s Streaming Service
Shyamalan’s thriller is just the latest entry in Apple’s ever-growing streaming service. Apple has previously announced a reboot ofSteven Spielberg’sAmazing Stories, which originally hadBryan Fulleron board as showrunner (Fuller hassince left, as seems to be his style).TheBig SickwritersKumail NanjianiandEmily V. There’s no word just how Apple plans to debut their service – will it be available via iTunes, or are they going to release a brand new platform? For now, all we know is that Apple is all-in on cornering the increasingly popular streaming content market. Netflix currently reigns supreme here, but Amazon and Hulu are constantly competing. On top of that, Disney is in the process of developing their ownstreaming servicewhich will featureStar Warstitles, Marvel-related material, original movies, and more.
