Speaking with the website, executive producerJamie Pagliaexplained why they felt the need to reinvent the Scream mask in the first place:

The [original] mask is so iconic. If you were to have that mask in a television series, but you weren’t following any of the characters [from the original], I believe that would be misleading the audience.

The new Scream mask isn’t too far off from the old Scream mask, but according to executive producerJill Blotevogelit’s intended to reference some other horror classics as well:

It evokes some of the Jason hockey mask and the white Michael Myers mask, but it’s still first and foremost evocative of the Scream mask. It’s sort of a reinvention while also paying homage.

And for his part,Wes Craven, who started this whole thing by directing the original 1996Scream, gives the new look his stamp of approval:

The new mask is cool and scary and takes the series into a new direction. It also ties into the story, which I won’t give away.

We first heard of MTV’s plans for a new Scream mask last fall, when it was described as a"more grounded," “more organic"redesign. That had some (including us) speculating that the new mask would be made of flesh, but that’s clearly not the case as you’re able to see above.

“The mask was a big discussion creatively,” said MTV execMina Lefevreat the time. “We wanted to get a nod and a wink to what the original was, but we definitely wanted to make it more on par with what horror is now, which is darker.“Edvard Munch’s painting The Screamwas cited as another inspiration.
