POTD: ‘Star Wars Episode VII’ Battery Of John Boyega, Daisy Ridley And J.J. Abrams Plus A Cameo
What you’ve got to love about Twitter are the windows it opens. The way a single tweet can just set your imagination on fire with possibility. Monday night, that happened twice. First as a joke, and then as a photo.
The photo featuredStar Wars Episode VIIdirectorJ.J. Abramswith his two co-stars,John BoyegaandDaisy Ridley. It made you dream about the conversations being held between these three. Then, in the background, was someone else. Another famous director who, earlier that evening, made you wish if you could be one place in the world last night, it was with him.Edgar Wrighttweeted that he too was hanging out with Abrams.

Now, don’t read into this. Abrams and Wright are friends and the pair were just at dinner (and Wright famouslydirected one shotofStar Trek into Darkness). Of note, though, is the timestamp. 8:34 p.m. PST. They are not in London. They’re in Los Angeles. Filming onStar Wars Episode VIIhas not restarted yet. At least not in London.
But here’s the really fun one. A few hours after that, John Boyega – who knows Wright because he producedAttack the Block–posted this.
Yes that’s Abrams, Boyega and Ridley, who must have all been in Los Angeles too. It’s exciting to see them all so happy as it suggests things are going well. That’s the best part of the photo. But the second best is hidden between Boyega and Abrams. Wright makes a cameo.
Some will jump to conclusions and be like, “Oh my god, Edgar Wright is directingEpisode IX!” Don’t do that. While that would, obviously, be amazing, all signs point toRian Johnson. Also, if Wright was in meetings for aStar Warsfilm, it wouldn’t be with Abrams. It would be withKathleen Kennedyand it wouldn’t be posted on Twitter.
On a purely human level, you have to think the reason Abrams keeps hanging out with and sharingStar Warswith these famous filmmakers and actors not involved in the film — Wright, Kevin Smith, Simon Pegg etc. – is because he knows he can trust them. And J.J. wants to geek out. He wants to tellStar Warsfans all about his film but, he can’t. The mystery box doesn’t allow it. Maybe Wright, a huge proponent of Twitter, talked some sense into Abrams. We’ll see.
