Stephen Colbert Is Just Like Us, Tries To Guess Entire Plot Of ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’
It’s been over a week since theStar Wars: The Force Awakenstrailer debuted, and fans are still watching it on repeat, dissecting every single frame for clues, and trying to understandwhy the Jedi have become mythin theStar Warsuniverse. And that includes late night personalityStephen Colbert.
As theThe Late Showhost, who didn’t have new episodes last week, said on his show last night, “This was not a 10-second slow fade teaser. None of that BS. This was a real trailer with actual chunks of movie flavor crystals in it. And I was deeply moved.” In fact, Colbert was so affected by the trailer that he took a couple minutes out of his show to guess the entireStar Wars: The Force Awakensplot.
Here’s Stephen Colbert’s somewhat educated guess atThe Force Awakensplot fromThe Late Show:
While Colbert doesn’t get quite as deep as we would have hoped, he does make one interesting prediction about the plot of the movie. But if we’re really going to dive into that element, you should be warned ofpotential spoilersfrom now on.
First, here’s the most interesting part of what Colbert says:
It has been three decades since the events of the original trilogy. The dark and mysterious First Order has stepped into the power vacuum once held by the Empire. And the newly named Resistance fights in place of the Rebel Alliance, which has begun a tragic shift to the dark side. But John Boyega’s character is in a Stormtrooper suit, so it follows that now thenewNew Hope comes from the very enemy we’ve been trained to hate.
Remember, the Dark Side was never explicitly tied to the Empire. The Force itself exists outside of mere temporal authority structures. So I predict that dark becomes light, light becomes dark, and the very fabric of the Force is stretched to its limit as a new generation emerges to tear down the false distinctions of the past and unite all of us: old and new, moisture farmers and nerf herders, star and wars, once and for all, bringing peace to the galaxy.
Now this is obviously a very broad guess at the events ofStar Wars: The Force Awakens, but the idea that maybe the Resistance is starting to shift to the dark side in how they fight against the First Order is an interesting thought. The only problem is if that were the case, it would make pretty much all our heroes inherently flawed for joining the fight.
But this does call attention to how great it is that one of our new primary heroes in theStar Warsuniverse was a soldier of The First Order. Is he really thenewNew Hope as Colbert predicts? We’ve seen Finn carrying a lightsaber in the most recent trailer, but Rey is also situatednext to Kylo Ren on the final posteras the perfect juxtaposition of the dark side and the light of the Force awakening.
Plus, if Colbert’s plot really did come to fruition and brought peace to the galaxy, there wouldn’t be any reason forStar Wars: Episode VIII. Nice try, Stephen. Maybe yourcrossguard lightsaber explanationwill pan out better. We’ll all just have to wait and see what happens onDecember 17th.
