‘True Detective’ Season 3 Confirmed For 2019, ‘Deadwood’ Movie Might Shoot This Fall
I can’t think of a television show that’s experienced a drop in quality as drastic as the one that came between seasons one and two of HBO’sTrue Detective. But from what I can gather, the primary reason behind that plunge was because season two was rushed into production, and that certainly won’t be the case forTrue Detectiveseason 3. HBO chiefCasey Bloysjust confirmed that the crime series will finally return to the network in 2019 – and while he was at it, he gave a new update about the long-awaitedDeadwoodmovie, too.
The last time we saw an episode ofTrue Detectiveon our television screens feels like eons ago, way back in August of 2015. But it’ll be at least another year before we return to creator/showrunnerNic Pizzolatto’s twisted, noir-ish world.
At the Television Critics Association winter press tour (viaThe Playlist), Bloys was asked ifTrue Detectivewas coming back this year or not, and he responded, “No, 2019.” While those who are hankerin' for another heaping helping of hardboiled crime drama might be disappointed to hear that they’ll have to wait a little while longer before they get it, I think this is the best outcome for the show. It means that Pizzolatto has had plenty of time to write and fine-tune his new scripts (he wrote all of season 3 himself, except for one episode that he co-wrote withDeadwoodcreatorDavid Milch, who came on board as something of a writing advisor).

Meanwhile, the long-rumoredDeadwoodmovie inches closer to finally becoming a real possibility. Bloys also revealed that if the stars align, the movie could end up shooting this fall:
“David Milch is doing a rewrite that he and the producers were talking about. If they can get all the actors together, which they’re trying to do — and everybody wants to do it — if they can get everybody back together, we’re looking at fall 2018 to shoot something. But a lot of things have to fall into place for that to happen. But I’m optimistic.”
We’d heardrumorsabout a potential fall start date as last year approached its end, but hearing it directly from Bloys makes it seem that much more real. Still, I think fans who have been hearing talk about aDeadwoodmovie for years probably won’t be happy until they see a trailer for the final product, or at least some photos from the set to prove that this is indeed actually happening.
