“You Are Going To See” ‘Cloverfield 2,’ Says Matt Reeves

Several years have past since we’ve heard anything about a sequel to the 2008 hit filmCloverfield. Since its release directorMatt ReevesmadeLet Me In,a worthy remake ofLet The Right One In, producerJ.J. Abramsmade another monster blockbuster,Star Trek, and remains in the mysterious movie business withSuper 8while writerDrew Goddardis writingRobopocalypsefor Steven Spielberg. Since all the principals are so busy, not much has happened in regards toCloverfield 2but in a recent interview, Reeves said “Well, you are going to see it – we just don’t know when.” Read more after the break.

In talking withTotal Film Magazine(with a heads up fromCloverfield Clues) Reeves had the following to say:

Well, you are going to see it – we just don’t know when [laughs]. At the moment we are talking about the story quite a lot. Drew Goddard, who wrote the original, is going to pen the sequel and JJ Abrams is very much involved. However, the three of us have been so busy that getting the right idea together has been taking a long time.

He was then asked if the film would be in the same real time format:

You see, that’s a difficult part: we want it to be shot like the first but how can you continue that idea successfully for a second time? We have a lot of affection for the original and the sequel can’t just be the same thing. But that is tricky when you need to have a monster destroying stuff once again.

Whenever Abrams has been asked about it over the past few years,hekeepsreiteratingthat they have a few pretty solid ideas but just have to flush them out, which is more or less what Reeves is saying here too. We’d also heard that the film won’t be a"literal sequel"and could happen parallel to the original film, which probably counts as one of those ideas.

To be honest, while I enjoyCloverfieldfor what it is, the Bad Robot team is one of the few groups of people in Hollywood who are coming up with original ideas from time to time (even if they do dabble in remakes and reboots) so I’d much rather see another new idea than a sequel toCloverfield. We’ve seen it, it was a hit, but now it’s done. If Reeves is to be believed, however and a sequel is inevitable, well, I also trust them to not jump into it for the wrong reasons.
